Kitchen In RV

Many RVs serve as travel homes. They allow many practical living conveniences while owners are on the road.

RVs vary, but they often come with many of the conveniences of any other home. These may include TVs, bathrooms, kitchens and various appliances. Within each of these conveniences also lies a risk. Should appliances malfunction, they might damage or even destroy the RV.

In these situations, RV owners should turn to their insurance policies for more help.

RV Coverage for Appliances

An RV insurance policy often protects appliance risks. Both collision and comprehensive coverage may help protect appliance systems. Should a hazard damage an appliance, the policy should repair or replace it.

If the appliances themselves cause the hazard, the policy may provide coverage for the damage. Yet, the policy may only honor the claim if the accident was unpreventable or unavoidable.

Appliances the policies may cover include:

  • Refrigeration and cooking systems
  • HVAC and electrical systems
  • Entertainment systems
  • Plumbing, sewage and other water systems

Keep in mind that different policies may classify RVs differently. Some may not cover every appliance risk. When you apply for an RV policy, make sure it covers risks associated with all of the systems in your RV. If you make any modifications to your appliance systems, tell your agent. They may need to adjust your policy to take these risks into account.

Protecting Your Vehicle's Appliances

Whenever you operate an RV, you run the risk of sustaining appliance damage. Even innocent mistakes may lead to major appliance damages. You may not be able to prevent vehicle accidents altogether. But you can take the following steps to otherwise protect your RV's appliances.

  • Only operate the machinery according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • If you plan to go extended periods without using the RV, shut down all appliances and prepare them for storage.
  • Perform maintenance on all systems as needed. Regularly clean out these systems. Such practices may include removing grease from cooking ranges or dust from heaters.
  • Periodically inspect your major appliance systems. If you notice damage or corrosion, take the RV to a mechanic to have the problem repaired. Until you can get the affected system fixed, do not operate the system. Do not go long periods while knowingly neglecting damage.
  • Include safety materials in your RVs that may help you combat appliance problems. A small tool kit, fire extinguishers, or emergency shutoff valves could all help prevent problems.

With the proper care, you can reduce appliance risks in your RV. But it's still a good idea to get RV insurance coverage as well.
